Knowra Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park A transboundary conservation area linking protected lands in Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. It connects national parks across borders while retaining each country’s sovereignty and management responsibilities.
Kruger National Park : A large South African national park in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, known for its wildlife and biodiversity. It forms the park’s western anchor and connects to protected areas in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Peace Parks Foundation : A nonprofit organization that supports the establishment and development of transfrontier conservation areas in southern Africa. It helped broker and support the agreement that established the Great Limpopo initiative.
African bush elephant : The largest living land mammal, native to savannas and forests across sub-Saharan Africa. Its movements and population recovery became prominent measures of the park’s ecological reconnection.
Habitat fragmentation : The division of continuous habitat into smaller, isolated patches by natural or human-made barriers. Roads, fences, and settlement can undermine the connectivity the transfrontier project seeks.
Limpopo National Park : A protected area in southern Mozambique, adjoining South Africa’s Kruger National Park. It is the principal Mozambican component of the transboundary conservation area.
Great Limpopo Treaty : The 2002 international agreement establishing cooperation among Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe on the transfrontier park. It provides the formal framework for coordinating the three countries’ conservation efforts.
Human–wildlife conflict : Interactions between people and wild animals that cause harm, loss, or disputes over land and resources. Wider wildlife movement can bring animals into contact with farms and settlements near the park.
Protected area : A geographically defined area managed to conserve nature and associated cultural values over the long term. The project links existing protected areas but does not erase their separate legal and management systems.
Gonarezhou National Park : A national park in southeastern Zimbabwe, known for sandstone cliffs, baobabs, and wildlife. It supplies the Zimbabwean component linked to the wider conservation landscape.
Wildlife corridor : A landscape connection that enables animals to move between otherwise separated habitats. Removing barriers between parks is intended to allow wildlife to range across national borders.
