Great man theory

Great man theory explains major historical events and social change chiefly through the actions and qualities of exceptional individuals, rather than broader social forces.

Thomas Carlyle: A Scottish essayist and historian whose writings portrayed exceptional leaders as decisive forces in history. His lectures on heroes gave the theory its most influential early expression.
Social history: An approach to history that examines the lives, relationships, and conditions of ordinary people and social groups. It redirects attention from celebrated leaders to collective experience and everyday life.
Historical biography: The study and narrative of an individual’s life in its historical setting. Biographies can test whether a leader’s choices changed events or reflected larger forces.
