Great Mosque of Córdoba

A major mosque in Córdoba whose construction began under Abd al-Rahman I and continued under later rulers. Its layered expansion and later conversion produced one of the most distinctive religious buildings in Europe.

Hypostyle mosque: A mosque whose roof is supported by many columns, creating a broad, columned prayer hall. The mosque’s original prayer space is a landmark example of this architectural type.
Abd al-Rahman I: The Umayyad prince who established an independent emirate in al-Andalus in 756. He began construction of the mosque in 785, establishing its first prayer hall.
Qibla: The direction Muslims face during prayer, toward the Kaaba in Mecca. The mosque’s prayer hall is oriented toward a qibla wall that does not align precisely with Mecca.
Reconquista: The centuries-long expansion of Christian kingdoms into territories ruled by Muslim states in the Iberian Peninsula. Córdoba’s conquest in 1236 ended the building’s use as a congregational mosque.
Great Mosque of Damascus: An eighth-century congregational mosque in Damascus, built on the site of earlier religious structures. Its monumental courtyard plan offers an eastern Islamic comparison to Córdoba’s columned hall.
Horseshoe arch: An arch whose curve extends below the level where its sides begin to turn inward. Its repeated horseshoe arches define the mosque’s interior elevations.
Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba: The independent Muslim state in al-Andalus ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 756 to 929. The mosque’s first construction and early expansions served this emirate’s capital.
Spolia: Reused architectural elements taken from older buildings and incorporated into new construction. Roman and Visigothic columns were reused in the mosque’s earliest construction.
Mosque–cathedral of Córdoba: The Catholic cathedral established within Córdoba’s former Great Mosque after the Christian conquest. The cathedral’s insertion transformed the mosque while preserving much of its earlier structure.
Great Mosque of Kairouan: A major early Islamic mosque in Kairouan, Tunisia, whose present form largely dates to the ninth century. Its North African plan and minaret help distinguish Córdoba’s architectural development.
