Great Seto Bridge

The Great Seto Bridge is a road-and-rail bridge system linking Okayama Prefecture on Honshu with Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku across the Seto Inland Sea.

Seto-Ohashi Line: A railway route across the Seto Inland Sea connecting Okayama and Kagawa. It carries passenger and freight trains over the bridge system’s railway decks.
Suspension bridge: A bridge whose deck hangs from cables supported by towers and anchored at both ends. Several major spans use this form to cross navigable channels.
Honshu–Shikoku Bridge Authority: A Japanese public corporation established to plan and build bridges between Honshu and Shikoku. The authority managed the project that produced the Great Seto Bridge.
Seto-Chuo Expressway: An expressway running between Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture and Sakaide in Kagawa Prefecture via the Great Seto Bridge. It carries road vehicles along the bridge system’s route.
Kobe–Awaji–Naruto Expressway: A road route linking Honshu and Shikoku through Awaji Island and the Naruto Strait. Unlike the Great Seto route, this crossing carries no railway.
Honshu–Shikoku Bridge Project: A national infrastructure program connecting Japan’s main island, Honshu, with Shikoku by bridges. The Great Seto Bridge is one of this program’s three crossing routes.
Cable-stayed bridge: A bridge whose deck is supported directly by cables connected to one or more towers. Cable-stayed construction is used for a shorter crossing within the bridge system.
Kagawa Maru disaster: A 1955 ferry accident in the Seto Inland Sea that killed 168 people, many of them schoolchildren. The disaster intensified public demands for a fixed crossing to Shikoku.
Sakaide: A city in Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku, at the southern end of the Great Seto Bridge. Its port and transport links connect the bridge to Shikoku.
Nishiseto Expressway: A road route between Onomichi on Honshu and Imabari on Shikoku, crossing the Seto Inland Sea by bridges and islands. It is another Honshu–Shikoku route, but it is designed for road traffic alone.
