Great Stand on the Ugra River

The 1480 confrontation between Ivan III’s forces and the Golden Horde on the Ugra River ended without a decisive battle and marked the end of Horde dominance over northeastern Rus′.

Ugra River: A river in western Russia that flows into the Oka and formed the line between opposing forces in 1480. Its banks and crossings shaped the armies’ standoff.
Golden Horde: A Mongol successor state that ruled much of the Eurasian steppe and exerted authority over Rus′ principalities. Its earlier dominance created the political relationship challenged in 1480.
Grand Duchy of Moscow: A medieval East Slavic state centered on Moscow that expanded into the core of the Russian state. The end of Horde dominance strengthened its independent rule.
Battle of Molodi: A 1572 battle in which Russian forces defeated a Crimean Tatar and Ottoman army near Moscow. It was a later pitched battle against a different Tatar power, not a bloodless standoff.

Akhmat Khan: A khan of the Great Horde who led its campaign against Ivan III in 1480. His army’s failure to cross the Ugra ended the campaign.
Dmitry Donskoy: The prince of Moscow from 1359 to 1389, remembered for leading Rus′ forces at the Battle of Kulikovo. His military resistance foreshadowed later challenges to Horde authority.
