Great Terror

The Great Terror was the Soviet mass repression of 1936–1938, marked by executions, imprisonment, deportation, and coerced confessions. It is often called the Great Purge.

NKVD: The Soviet secret police agency responsible for state security and mass repression from 1934 to 1946. The NKVD organized arrests, interrogations, executions, and deportations during the terror.
Joseph Stalin: The Soviet leader who ruled the USSR as a dictator from the late 1920s until his death in 1953. Stalin’s leadership drove the political climate and decisions behind the mass repression.
Nikolai Yezhov: The Soviet official who headed the NKVD from 1936 to 1938 during the peak of mass repression. Yezhov directed the security apparatus at the terror’s height and was later arrested and executed.
Decossackization: Soviet policies that dismantled Cossack social institutions and targeted Cossack communities after the Russian Revolution. The terror’s national and social operations extended earlier campaigns against designated populations.
NKVD Order No. 00447: A 1937 Soviet directive authorizing mass operations against alleged former kulaks, criminals, and other designated groups. It set regional arrest and execution quotas for one of the terror’s largest operations.
Sergei Kirov: A prominent Soviet Communist Party leader assassinated in Leningrad in 1934. His murder became a pretext for intensified repression and investigations of alleged enemies.
Genrikh Yagoda: The Soviet security chief who led the NKVD from 1934 until 1936. Yagoda’s removal preceded Yezhov’s tenure and formed part of the purge of security leadership.
Polish Operation of the NKVD: A 1937–1938 NKVD mass operation that arrested and executed Soviet citizens accused of Polish connections or espionage. It demonstrates how the terror targeted ethnic groups through centrally directed operations.
Moscow Trials: Three public show trials in Moscow from 1936 to 1938, where prominent defendants confessed to fabricated conspiracies. Their staged proceedings publicly framed alleged plots while purges spread through the party.
Assassination of Sergei Kirov: The 1934 killing of Soviet party leader Sergei Kirov, followed by a state investigation and political crackdown. The regime used the killing to justify emergency measures that preceded the terror.
