Great Trek

The migration of Dutch-speaking settlers from the Cape Colony into southern Africa’s interior during the 1830s and 1840s. It led to the founding of Boer republics and intensified conflicts over land and sovereignty.

Cape Colony: A British-ruled colony at southern Africa’s tip, established from the Dutch Cape settlement. The migration began within this colony, whose rule and policies settlers rejected.
Voortrekkers: Dutch-speaking settlers who left the Cape Colony during the Great Trek. They were the migrating communities whose journeys define the event.
Natalia Republic: A short-lived Boer republic established in Natal after the Voortrekkers’ victory at Blood River. It was an early political outcome of migration beyond the Cape.
Great Trek historiography: The historical study of the Great Trek and changing interpretations of its causes and effects. Historians dispute whether emancipation, frontier insecurity, or political autonomy mattered most.
Slavery Abolition Act 1833: British legislation that abolished slavery across most of the British Empire, with compensation and a transition period. Its implementation in the Cape featured among grievances voiced by trek leaders.
Battle of Vegkop: An 1836 battle in which a Voortrekker laager repelled an attack by Ndebele forces. It illustrates the violent encounters along migration routes.
South African Republic: A nineteenth-century Boer republic in the Transvaal, recognized by Britain in 1852. Migrants and their descendants established this major inland republic.
Dorsland Trek: A later migration of Boer communities from the Transvaal toward present-day Namibia during the 1870s. It was a distinct migration, often confused with the earlier Great Trek.
Frontier Wars: A series of conflicts between the Cape Colony and Xhosa polities along the eastern frontier. Repeated frontier warfare shaped settler fears and disputes before the migration.
Battle of Blood River: An 1838 battle in which a Voortrekker force defeated a Zulu army near the Ncome River. The battle became a defining episode in Afrikaner accounts of the Trek.
