Greek comedy

Greek comedy was a form of ancient Greek drama that used humor, satire, and public critique. Its surviving plays range from the political fantasy of Old Comedy to the domestic plots of New Comedy.

Old Comedy: The earliest surviving phase of Greek comedy, known for topical satire, political fantasy, and a prominent chorus. Its bold attacks on contemporary figures define the form’s most openly political phase.
The Acharnians: A comedy by Aristophanes in which an Athenian citizen makes a private peace during the Peloponnesian War. Its peace-making fantasy shows comedy’s power to attack wartime policy.
Aristophanes: An Athenian comic playwright of the fifth century BCE and the best-preserved author of Old Comedy. His surviving plays are the chief evidence for comedy’s political satire and theatrical form.
