Greek literature

Greek literature comprises works written in Greek, from ancient epic poetry and drama to modern fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

Ancient Greek literature: Literature written in Greek from the earliest surviving texts through late antiquity. It forms the foundational ancient layer of the broader Greek-language tradition.
Iliad: An ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, centered on the Trojan War and the anger of Achilles. Its epic form and heroic world became enduring reference points for Greek literature.
Homer: The name traditionally given to the ancient Greek poet credited with the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Homeric epics set the earliest enduring model for Greek literary authority.
Greek mythology: The body of myths about Greek gods, heroes, and origins preserved in ancient texts and traditions. Myth supplies plots and figures repeatedly reworked in Greek poetry and drama.
Byzantine literature: Literature produced in the Byzantine Empire, chiefly in Greek, from late antiquity to 1453. It carries Greek literary production through the medieval centuries.
Odyssey: An ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, recounting Odysseus’s long return from Troy. Its journey narrative shaped Greek storytelling and later literature.
Sappho: An archaic Greek lyric poet from Lesbos, known chiefly through fragments of her poems. Her surviving lyrics reveal a distinct voice within early Greek poetry.
Greek theatre: The performance traditions and theatrical spaces of ancient and later Greece. Theatre provides the public setting in which much Greek drama was composed and performed.
Modern Greek literature: Literature written in Modern Greek from the early modern period to the present. It shows how Greek writing continued after the Byzantine era.
Oresteia: A trilogy of tragedies by Aeschylus about the house of Atreus and the founding of civic justice. It demonstrates how Greek drama joins myth, politics, and moral conflict.
