Greek resistance

Greek resistance comprised underground organizations and armed groups that opposed Axis occupation of Greece during the Second World War through sabotage, intelligence, and guerrilla warfare.

National Liberation Front (Greece): A broad Greek resistance coalition founded in 1941 and dominated by the Communist Party of Greece. Its political and military networks made it the largest resistance organization.
Axis occupation of Greece: The occupation of Greece by German, Italian, and Bulgarian forces from 1941 to 1944. It created the conditions that the resistance sought to overturn.
Aris Velouchiotis: A Greek communist and guerrilla commander who became a leading figure in ELAS. His leadership helped turn ELAS into a formidable field force.
Dekemvriana: The December 1944 armed clashes in Athens between EAM forces and the British-backed Greek government. Conflict over post-occupation power turned former resistance allies into enemies.

National Republican Greek League: A Greek resistance organization founded in 1941 under the leadership of Napoleon Zervas. It provided a major non-communist armed rival to EAM-ELAS.
Great Famine of Greece: A catastrophic famine in occupied Greece, especially during the winter of 1941–1942. Hunger and requisitions fueled popular opposition and relief networks.
