Greek Revival architecture

Greek Revival architecture is a nineteenth-century style that reinterprets ancient Greek temples through monumental proportions, classical orders, and restrained ornament.

Doric order: The simplest of the three classical Greek architectural orders, characterized by sturdy columns and plain capitals. Its robust columns became a defining choice for Greek Revival porticos.
Greek War of Independence: The revolt against Ottoman rule that established an independent Greek state in the nineteenth century. Public sympathy for Greece helped make Greek forms culturally resonant in Europe and America.
United States Capitol: The seat of the United States Congress, whose neoclassical design draws on ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Its classical imagery helped establish Greek-derived forms as symbols of republican government.
