Greek temple

A building dedicated to a deity in ancient Greece, commonly housing the deity’s cult statue. Its architectural form developed through regional traditions and recognizable column orders.

Naos: The principal inner room of a Greek temple, often containing the deity’s cult statue. This chamber housed the image at the center of a temple’s sacred purpose.
Ancient Greek religion: The diverse practices and beliefs through which ancient Greek communities honored gods and heroes. Temples belonged to a religious system centered on ritual acts as well as sacred buildings.
Mycenaean architecture: The architecture of the Late Bronze Age Mycenaean civilization in mainland Greece. Its megaron hall is often compared with the layout of early Greek temples.
Parthenon: A fifth-century BCE temple to Athena on the Athenian Acropolis, built in the Doric order. It is the best-known example of the monumental classical Greek temple.
Panhellenic sanctuary: A sanctuary in ancient Greece that drew worshippers and communities from across the Greek world. Temples at shared sanctuaries gave religious architecture a role beyond individual city-states.
Pronaos: The entrance porch or vestibule leading into the naos of a Greek temple. Its arrangement defined the transition from the temple exterior to the inner chamber.
Cult statue: A sacred image of a deity that served as the focus of worship in an ancient sanctuary. The temple’s inner chamber commonly sheltered the deity’s image.
Geometric period: A period of ancient Greek art and culture, conventionally dated about 900–700 BCE. Early monumental temples began to take shape during this period.
Temple of Hephaestus: A well-preserved fifth-century BCE Doric temple in the Athenian Agora. Its surviving structure offers unusually clear evidence of classical temple design.
Polis: An ancient Greek city-state comprising a community and its surrounding territory. A city’s temple expressed civic identity as well as devotion to its patron deity.
