Gregg Toland

Gregg Toland (1904–1948) was an American cinematographer whose deep-focus photography kept foreground, middle distance, and background sharply legible. His work on Citizen Kane helped make that style widely influential.

Citizen Kane: Orson Welles’s 1941 film follows the rise and decline of newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane. Toland’s deep-focus photography and low-angle compositions helped define the film’s visual style.
Deep focus: A photographic technique in which subjects at different distances from the camera remain sharply focused. Toland became especially associated with making foreground and background detail legible together.
Orson Welles: Orson Welles (1915–1985) was an American actor, director, writer, and producer. Welles and Toland jointly developed the visual approach of Citizen Kane.
