Gregorian Reform

Gregorian Reform was an eleventh-century movement to strengthen papal authority and reform the clergy, especially by opposing lay control of church offices and enforcing clerical celibacy.

Investiture Controversy: A conflict over whether secular rulers could appoint bishops and other church officials. The dispute over lay investiture became the reform movement’s defining confrontation with secular power.
Cluniac Reform: A monastic reform movement centered on the Abbey of Cluny, founded in 910. Cluniac ideals of disciplined religious life helped shape the wider reform climate.
Gregory VII: Pope from 1073 to 1085 who asserted papal authority and confronted secular control of church appointments. His name became attached to the reform movement and its most confrontational phase.
Concordat of Worms: The 1122 agreement that ended the main phase of the Investiture Controversy between the papacy and emperor. It formalized a compromise over spiritual and temporal aspects of appointing bishops.
Dictatus papae: A collection of propositions asserting the pope’s authority, recorded in the register of Gregory VII in 1075. Its claims expressed the strongest version of papal supremacy associated with the reform.
Abbey of Cluny: A Benedictine monastery in Burgundy that became the center of a powerful monastic network. Its independence from local lay control offered a model for ecclesiastical autonomy.
Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor: Holy Roman Emperor from 1084 to 1105 who contested Gregory VII’s authority over episcopal appointments. His conflict with Gregory VII exposed the movement’s challenge to imperial power.
Canossa: The 1077 meeting at which Henry IV sought absolution from Gregory VII at Canossa Castle. The episode became a vivid symbol of the papacy’s challenge to imperial authority.
