Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro

Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro (1853–1925) was an Italian mathematician who developed absolute differential calculus, the framework later known as tensor calculus and used by Albert Einstein in general relativity.

Tullio Levi-Civita: An Italian mathematician who developed tensor calculus and made major contributions to differential geometry and mechanics. Ricci and Levi-Civita jointly presented absolute differential calculus in their 1900 paper.
Tensor calculus: A system for manipulating tensors and expressing geometric and physical laws independently of coordinate choices. This is the later name for the calculus Ricci-Curbastro developed.
Differential geometry: The study of smooth spaces, their curves, surfaces, and geometric structures using calculus. Absolute differential calculus formalized methods for studying geometry on curved spaces.
General relativity: Einstein’s theory describing gravity as the curvature of spacetime produced by matter and energy. Its field equations use tensor calculus to relate spacetime curvature to energy and momentum.

Einstein field equations: A set of tensor equations relating spacetime geometry to the distribution of matter and energy. They demonstrate the physical use of the mathematical framework Ricci-Curbastro helped establish.
Elwin Bruno Christoffel: A German mathematician whose work on differential forms and connections contributed to differential geometry. Christoffel’s earlier methods supplied tools that Ricci-Curbastro incorporated into tensor calculus.
Covariant derivative: A derivative that accounts for how vector and tensor components vary across a curved space. It extends ordinary differentiation to the curved geometries treated by tensor calculus.
