Grenada

Grenada is an island country in the southeastern Caribbean, comprising the island of Grenada and several smaller islands. Its capital is St. George’s.

Kalínago: The Indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles, historically known to Europeans as Island Caribs. Kalínago communities inhabited Grenada before European colonization.
Lesser Antilles: The eastern arc of Caribbean islands stretching from the Virgin Islands toward Trinidad and Tobago. Grenada lies at the southern end of this island arc.
Nutmeg: A spice made from the seed of the tropical tree Myristica fragrans. Nutmeg is a major agricultural export and a prominent national symbol.
Maurice Bishop: A Grenadian politician who led the People’s Revolutionary Government from 1979 until his death in 1983. Bishop was the central leader of Grenada’s revolutionary government.
St. George’s: The capital and principal port of Grenada, located on the island’s southwestern coast. Its harbor and historic center anchor the country’s political and commercial life.
French colonization of the Americas: France’s settlement, conquest, and administration of territories in the Americas from the sixteenth century onward. France established colonial rule on Grenada before ceding the island to Britain.
Windward Islands: A group of southeastern Caribbean islands that includes Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines. Grenada is commonly grouped with these islands geographically and historically.
Mace: A spice made from the dried, lacy covering of the nutmeg seed. Grenada grows and exports mace alongside nutmeg.
Eric Gairy: A Grenadian politician who became the country’s first prime minister after independence. Gairy’s government was overthrown in the 1979 revolution.
Carriacou: An island north of Grenada that forms part of the country’s territory. Carriacou is the largest of Grenada’s smaller inhabited islands.
