Greyhound racing

Greyhound racing is a sport in which greyhounds compete around a track or course, traditionally chasing an artificial lure.

Oval track: A closed circuit with two straights joined by curved ends. Its bends and straights determine the course greyhounds run.
Coursing: A field sport in which dogs pursue live game by sight rather than scent. Greyhound racing adapted the pursuit element of coursing for a controlled circuit.
Parimutuel betting: A betting system in which wagers are pooled and winnings depend on the final pool. Many greyhound tracks have financed racing through pooled betting.
Live hare coursing: A form of coursing in which dogs pursue a live hare across open ground. It uses live prey, unlike the artificial lure used in modern track racing.
Hare (racing lure): A moving artificial lure used to induce pursuit in animal racing. The lure leads the field around the track without direct competition for a live animal.
Owen Patrick Smith: An American promoter who developed an artificial-lure system for greyhound racing. His lure helped establish track racing as an alternative to live-animal coursing.
Greyhound adoption: The placement of retired racing greyhounds into homes as companion animals. Adoption programs address what happens to dogs after their racing careers.
Lure coursing: A dog sport in which dogs chase a mechanically operated lure over a course. It also uses an artificial lure but typically emphasizes individual pursuit rather than wagering races.
Starting box: A mechanical enclosure that holds racers until a contest begins. Greyhounds launch from individual boxes, which assign their starting positions.
Ballyregan Bob: An Irish racing greyhound who won 32 consecutive races from 1985 to 1986. His record illustrates the high-profile champions produced by modern track racing.
