Greywacke

Greywacke is a poorly sorted sandstone rich in rock fragments and muddy matrix. It commonly forms when turbidity currents deposit sediment in deep water.

Turbidity current: A sediment-laden density flow that moves downslope under gravity, commonly along the sea floor. These flows commonly carry and deposit the poorly sorted sediment that becomes greywacke.
Sandstone: A sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized mineral or rock grains cemented together. Greywacke is a compositionally immature variety of sandstone.
Sedimentology: The study of modern sediments and the processes that form sedimentary rocks. Greywacke interpretation draws on sedimentary processes, textures, and depositional environments.
Greywacke quarrying: The extraction of greywacke for construction aggregate, paving, and dimension stone. Its hardness and resistance to wear support practical use as crushed stone and paving.
Quartz arenite: A sandstone composed overwhelmingly of quartz grains, typically well sorted and compositionally mature. Its clean, quartz-rich texture contrasts with greywacke’s mixed grains and muddy matrix.
Turbidite: A sedimentary deposit produced by a turbidity current, often showing a graded sequence of grain sizes. Greywacke commonly occurs as the coarse part of a turbidite bed.
Rock fragment: A piece of preexisting rock incorporated as a grain in a sedimentary deposit. Abundant rock fragments are a defining component of greywacke.
Arkose: A feldspar-rich sandstone commonly derived from rapidly eroding granitic rocks. Arkose is another compositionally immature sandstone, but its feldspar-rich makeup differs from greywacke.
Provenance (geology): The study of the origins and transport history of sedimentary grains. Greywacke’s rock fragments can help identify the source terranes supplying ancient sediment.
Conglomerate: A coarse-grained sedimentary rock containing rounded or angular clasts larger than two millimeters. Conglomerate is much coarser than the sand-sized framework characteristic of greywacke.
