Grid code

A set of technical rules governing how generators, network operators, and other users connect to and operate within an electrical power system.

Frequency response: A power system’s adjustment of generation or demand to limit changes in grid frequency. Grid codes specify how connected resources must respond when frequency moves outside its normal range.
Generator interconnection: The process of connecting a generating facility to an electric power network. Grid-code compliance is a central condition for connecting new generation.
Distribution code: A set of technical rules governing operation and connections within an electricity distribution network. It focuses on distribution-system users, while a grid code often addresses the broader transmission system.
Power system stability: The ability of an electric power system to maintain or regain a stable operating state after disturbances. Grid-code performance requirements help prevent connected equipment from destabilizing the system.
Fault ride-through: The ability of an electrical resource to remain connected during a temporary voltage disturbance. Connection rules often require generators to withstand faults instead of disconnecting and worsening instability.
Distributed generation: Electricity produced by relatively small facilities connected near consumers or within distribution networks. Grid codes define how distributed resources behave as their numbers grow on local networks.
Electricity market rules: Rules governing trading, settlement, and participation in electricity markets. Market rules allocate commercial obligations; grid codes define technical behavior on the power system.
Renewable energy integration: The incorporation of variable renewable generation into electricity systems while maintaining reliable operation. Grid codes adapt connection and operating requirements to the behavior of wind and solar resources.
Reactive power: Power that oscillates between sources and loads and supports voltage in alternating-current systems. Grid codes set reactive-power capabilities and voltage-control duties for connected equipment.
Offshore wind power: Electricity generated by wind turbines installed in bodies of water, usually at sea. Offshore wind projects must meet grid-code requirements for their connection and electrical behavior.
