Grid plan

A street layout in which roads cross at regular angles to form a network of blocks. Its repeated geometry makes routes and parcels relatively predictable.

Street network: The connected system of streets and paths that organizes movement through a settlement. A grid plan is one distinctive geometry for arranging this connected system.
Manhattan street grid: The numbered street-and-avenue network established across much of Manhattan under the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. It is a canonical large-scale grid, with long blocks and avenues crossing numbered streets.
Radial city plan: An urban layout in which streets radiate from a central point or hub. Radial streets prioritize convergence on a center rather than repeated right-angle blocks.
Walkability: How easily and safely people can reach destinations on foot in a built environment. Frequent crossings can shorten routes, though long blocks may make walking less direct.
Hippodamus of Miletus: An ancient Greek planner traditionally associated with systematic urban layouts and the orthogonal plan. His name became attached to the Greek tradition of deliberately ordered street plans.
Urban block: A tract of urban land enclosed by streets or other public spaces. Repeated intersections define the blocks that give a grid plan its structure.
Philadelphia street plan: The planned street layout of Philadelphia, whose central grid was laid out by William Penn and Thomas Holme. Its broad streets and square blocks show an early American application of regular urban geometry.
Organic street pattern: A street layout that develops incrementally in response to terrain, property boundaries, and local routes. Its irregular paths contrast with the grid's repeated geometry.
Urban morphology: The study of the physical form and spatial structure of towns and cities. Grid plans are a recurring urban form whose blocks and streets can be compared across places.
Miletus: An ancient Greek city in Anatolia whose rebuilt plan is associated with orthogonal street design. Its planned layout is a prominent ancient example of streets arranged on a grid.
