Group velocity

Group velocity is the speed at which a wave packet’s envelope travels, given by how angular frequency changes with wavenumber. It often tracks energy transport, but not always information or a signal’s front.

Dispersion relation: A relation specifying how a wave’s angular frequency depends on its wavenumber. Differentiating this relation with respect to wavenumber gives group velocity.
Optical fiber: A transparent waveguide that carries light along a thin core by confining it within the fiber. Its group velocity determines optical pulse travel times and contributes to dispersion.
Angular frequency: The rate of oscillation of a wave, measured in radians per unit time. It is the frequency variable differentiated to obtain group velocity.
Anomalous dispersion: A frequency range in which refractive index decreases as frequency increases. It can produce negative or unusually large group velocities near absorption features.
Wave packet: A localized disturbance formed by superposing waves with nearby frequencies or wavenumbers. Its envelope is the pattern whose propagation group velocity describes.
Slow light: The reduction of a light pulse’s group velocity through a material or engineered medium. It exploits controllable group velocity to delay optical pulses.
Wavenumber: The spatial frequency of a wave, measured as phase change per unit distance. It is the variable with respect to which angular frequency is differentiated.
Superluminal propagation: Wave or pulse propagation in which a measured speed exceeds the vacuum speed of light. Superluminal group velocity can occur without superluminal causal information transfer.
Phase velocity: The speed at which a wave’s constant-phase points move through space. It tracks individual crests, which can move differently from the packet envelope.
Cherenkov radiation: Electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle travels through a medium faster than light’s phase velocity there. The condition compares particle speed with phase velocity, not group velocity.
