Guano Islands Act

A United States law enacted in 1856 that authorized citizens to claim unoccupied islands containing guano deposits for the United States. It helped expand American overseas claims without requiring formal annexation.

Guano: Accumulated seabird or bat excrement used as a nutrient-rich fertilizer. The act made deposits of this valuable fertilizer the basis for island claims.
Guano trade: The international commerce in seabird and bat guano, especially as agricultural fertilizer. Rising demand for guano gave the statute its economic purpose.
Howland Island: A small, uninhabited island in the central Pacific Ocean and an unincorporated U.S. territory. American guano claims helped establish U.S. interest in this remote island.
Insular Cases: A series of U.S. Supreme Court decisions beginning in 1901 on the constitutional status of territories acquired overseas. The cases addressed how constitutional rules applied to island territories, including those claimed under the act.

Baker Island: A small, uninhabited island in the central Pacific Ocean and an unincorporated U.S. territory. Guano extraction and claims under the act drew the island into U.S. jurisdiction.
United States Minor Outlying Islands: A grouping of small, mostly uninhabited islands and atolls under U.S. sovereignty outside the states and the District of Columbia. Several islands claimed under the act are now grouped within this designation.
United States territorial acquisition: The processes by which the United States has acquired sovereignty over territory. The act offered a distinct legal mechanism for acquiring authority over islands.
Alexander von Humboldt: A Prussian naturalist and explorer whose writings helped bring attention to South American guano deposits. His accounts helped introduce European and American audiences to guano’s agricultural value.
