Guard hair

Guard hairs are the long, coarse outer hairs of many mammals’ coats. They shield the softer underfur from weather and debris and often contribute to coat color and texture.

Underfur: The dense, soft layer of fine hairs beneath a mammal’s outer coat. Guard hairs overlie this insulating layer and help keep it dry and free of debris.
Animal pelage: The coat of hair or fur covering a mammal. Guard hairs form the visible outer layer of pelage.
Polar bear: A large Arctic bear adapted to life on sea ice and in cold coastal environments. Its translucent guard hairs cover dense underfur and help protect the coat in Arctic conditions.
Underhair: Fine, soft hairs forming the dense inner layer of many mammalian coats. Underhair insulates, while guard hair forms the longer, tougher outer covering.
Hair follicle: A skin structure that produces and anchors a hair. Each guard hair grows from a follicle that determines its size and growth cycle.
Mammalian thermoregulation: The processes mammals use to maintain body temperature. By protecting the underfur, guard hairs help preserve the coat’s insulating function.
Sea otter: A marine mammal that relies on exceptionally dense fur for insulation. Its guard hairs help maintain the water-resistant condition of the insulating fur.
Vibrissa: A specialized tactile hair, such as a mammal’s whisker, connected to sensitive follicles. Vibrissae detect touch rather than serving as ordinary protective coat hairs.
Hair shaft: The visible, keratin-rich part of a hair extending above the skin. Its coarse, exposed shaft forms the protective surface of the coat.
Animal tracking: The study of signs left by animals to identify species and infer their behavior. Shed guard hairs can identify a mammal when tracks or sightings are absent.
