Guelphs and Ghibellines

Guelphs and Ghibellines were rival political factions in medieval Italy, broadly associated with support for the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, respectively.

Investiture Controversy: A conflict between the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire over the appointment of bishops and the limits of secular authority. Its contest over papal and imperial power laid groundwork for the factions’ later rivalry.
Communes of medieval Italy: Self-governing urban communities that emerged across northern and central Italy during the Middle Ages. Communal institutions gave local factions councils, offices, and civic power to contest.
Florence: A city in Tuscany that became a major center of commerce, finance, and Renaissance culture. Florentine Guelphs later split into White and Black factions with different political aims.
White Guelphs and Black Guelphs: Rival factions within late thirteenth-century Florence’s Guelph party, divided over relations with the papacy and political power. Their split shows that Guelph identity could fracture into competing local programs.
Welf Dynasty: A European noble dynasty whose name became associated with the papal-aligned Guelph faction. The dynasty supplied the name for the Italian faction associated with papal support.
Podestà: A chief magistrate, often hired from another city, who governed many Italian communes during the Middle Ages. Communes sometimes appointed podestà to manage factional conflict and maintain civic order.
Siena: A historic Tuscan city that rivaled Florence and supported the Ghibelline cause during much of the thirteenth century. Its victory at Montaperti became the best-known Ghibelline success against Florence.
Dante Alighieri: An Italian poet and political thinker best known for the Divine Comedy. A White Guelph, Dante was exiled after Black Guelphs gained control of Florence.
House of Hohenstaufen: A German royal and imperial dynasty that ruled the Holy Roman Empire during much of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Its dynastic rivalry with the Welfs gave the opposing faction its name and imperial alignment.
Exile in medieval Italy: A political punishment that removed individuals or families from an Italian city and barred their return. Factional victories often drove defeated opponents from their cities.
