foco theory : A guerrilla strategy in which a small rural insurgency seeks to spark a wider revolutionary movement. Guevara’s theory gave armed vanguards a proposed way to initiate revolution without waiting for mass organization.
Cuban Revolution : The 1953–1959 revolution that overthrew Fulgencio Batista and brought Fidel Castro’s movement to power. Its victory furnished Guevara with the experience behind his insurgency theory.
Marxism–Leninism : A communist political tradition combining Marxist analysis with Leninist revolutionary organization and state theory. Guevarism draws on this tradition while giving armed insurgency distinctive strategic emphasis.
Latin American guerrilla movements : Armed revolutionary organizations that operated across Latin America during the twentieth century. Many adopted Guevarist language or tactics, though their strategies and conditions differed.
