Guild

A guild is an association of people in the same trade that historically regulated training, standards, and commercial practices. Many guilds also governed membership and represented members’ interests.

Apprenticeship: A system of training in which a novice learns a trade through supervised work. Guilds often controlled entry into a trade by setting apprenticeship terms and durations.
Roman collegium: An association in ancient Rome organized around a shared occupation, religious practice, or civic purpose. Roman occupational associations offer an earlier comparison, though their continuity with medieval guilds is debated.
Guildmaster: A leader responsible for administering a guild and representing its members. Guildmasters enforced rules and negotiated with authorities on behalf of the association.
Urban autonomy: The capacity of a town or city to govern its own affairs. Guilds sometimes supported towns’ efforts to secure political privileges from rulers.
Master craftsman: A highly skilled craft worker recognized as qualified to run a workshop and train apprentices. Guilds often required members to meet master status before opening independent workshops.
Medieval Europe: The period and societies of Europe conventionally dated from the fifth to the fifteenth century. The guilds most often associated with the institution flourished in medieval European towns.
Apprentice: A person learning a trade under the supervision of an experienced worker. Apprentices entered the hierarchy that guilds used to reproduce skilled trades.
Mercantilism: An economic doctrine associating national wealth with regulated trade and accumulation of resources. Guild restrictions reflected and reinforced older practices of managed commerce.
Quality control: Procedures used to ensure that goods or services meet defined standards. Guilds used inspections and rules to maintain standards for members’ products.
Medieval town: An urban settlement in medieval Europe, often governed by local privileges and commercial institutions. Urban markets and municipal privileges gave many guilds the setting in which they operated.
