Guillaume Du Fay

Guillaume Du Fay (c. 1397–1474) was a Franco-Flemish composer and singer whose masses, motets, and chansons helped shape early Renaissance music.

Cantus firmus: A pre-existing melody used as the structural basis for a polyphonic composition. Du Fay built several large-scale sacred works around borrowed melodies.
Missa Se la face ay pale: A four-part mass by Du Fay that uses his chanson Se la face ay pale as its cantus firmus. It is an early, influential example of a complete cantus-firmus mass built from a secular song.
Cambrai: A city in northern France that was an important ecclesiastical and musical center in the fifteenth century. Du Fay spent his final decades there as a canon of the cathedral.
Pope Eugenius IV: The pope from 1431 to 1447, active in church diplomacy and the arts. Du Fay’s Italian service unfolded during Eugenius IV’s papacy.
Cyclic mass: A mass whose movements are linked by a shared musical theme or compositional device. Du Fay’s cantus-firmus masses helped establish this approach to musical unity.
Isorhythm: A compositional technique that repeats a rhythmic pattern, often alongside a recurring melodic sequence. His early motets use this medieval organizing principle.
Missa L'homme armé: Du Fay’s setting of the L'homme armé melody as a cantus firmus for a mass. It shows his late engagement with a tune that inspired many Renaissance mass settings.
Council of Constance: A church council held from 1414 to 1418 to address disputes within the Western Church. Du Fay’s early service in the papal chapel followed the council’s period of upheaval.
Nicholas III, Marquis of Ferrara: The Este ruler of Ferrara from 1393 to 1441 and a major patron of the arts. Du Fay served at the Ferrara court, linking his career to Este patronage.
Parody mass: A Renaissance mass that adapts several elements from a pre-existing polyphonic composition. Its later method of borrowing differs from the cantus-firmus practice prominent in Du Fay’s masses.
