Guitar amplifier

A guitar amplifier strengthens and shapes an electric guitar’s electrical signal, then usually drives a loudspeaker to produce sound. Its circuitry and speaker contribute to the instrument’s tone.

Guitar pickup: A transducer that converts vibrating guitar strings into an electrical signal. Its string-dependent signal is the input a guitar amplifier strengthens.
Vacuum tube: An electronic device that controls current through a vacuum using electrodes. Tube amplifiers use these devices in their preamp or power stages.
Guitar cabinet: An enclosure containing one or more loudspeakers designed for electric guitar. A separate cabinet lets an amplifier head drive guitar speakers chosen for their sound and power handling.
Electric guitar: A guitar whose strings produce an electrical signal through electromagnetic pickups or other transducers. Its amplified signal created the need for dedicated guitar amplifiers.
Overdrive: A guitar tone produced when an amplifier or effect is driven into gradual, often asymmetric distortion. Amplifier stages pushed beyond clean operation create a characteristic compressed, harmonically rich sound.
Preamplifier: An early amplification stage that raises a weak signal and may shape its frequency balance. This stage boosts the pickup signal and often supplies much of an amplifier’s tonal character.
Solid-state electronics: Electronic circuits built primarily from semiconductor devices rather than vacuum tubes. Solid-state amplifiers offer a different circuit approach from tube designs.
Guitar amplifier head: A guitar amplifier containing electronic amplification circuitry but no built-in loudspeaker. It pairs with a separate speaker cabinet rather than producing sound on its own.
Amplifier: An electronic device that increases a signal’s power or amplitude. Guitar amplifiers apply general amplification principles to instrument signals and loudspeakers.
Guitar distortion: The alteration of a guitar signal’s waveform, often used as a deliberate musical effect. Amplifiers helped turn signal distortion from an equipment limitation into a sought-after sound.
