Guitar

A fretted string instrument with a neck and a resonating body or electronic pickups, usually played by plucking or strumming.

Guitar string: A tensioned wire or nylon strand that vibrates to produce a guitar’s musical pitch. Its material, thickness, and tension shape the instrument’s tone and playable range.
Soundboard: A thin resonant surface that vibrates and radiates sound in an acoustic instrument. The acoustic guitar’s top transfers string energy to the surrounding air.
Bass guitar: A fretted string instrument designed primarily to play low-pitched bass lines, usually with four strings. It shares the guitar’s fretted layout but serves a lower register and different musical role.
Acoustic guitar: A guitar that produces sound primarily through the vibration of its body and soundboard. Its resonating body makes it usable without electronic amplification.
Fret: A raised metal strip across a stringed instrument’s fingerboard that sets a string’s vibrating length when pressed. Frets let guitarists select pitches reliably along the neck.
Guitar body: The main resonating or structural portion of a guitar, attached to its neck. Its shape and materials affect acoustic resonance or house electric components.
Banjo: A plucked string instrument with strings stretched over a circular frame and a taut membrane. Its membrane-covered body gives it a different sound and construction from a guitar.
Electric guitar: A guitar whose pickups convert string vibration into an electrical signal for amplification. Its amplified signal supports sustained notes, effects, and high volume.
Guitar tuning: The assignment of pitches to a guitar’s open strings. Standard tuning gives the six strings their familiar E–A–D–G–B–E arrangement.
Plucked string instrument: A string instrument whose sound is initiated by plucking one or more strings. Plucking is the shared sound-making principle behind guitar playing.
