Gukurahundi

Gukurahundi was a campaign of killings and repression by Zimbabwe’s Fifth Brigade against civilians, chiefly Ndebele, in Matabeleland and the Midlands from 1983 to 1987.

Zimbabwe National Army: Zimbabwe’s national military, formed in 1980 from forces of the former Rhodesian army and liberation movements. The Fifth Brigade was a unit of Zimbabwe’s army, though it operated under distinct command arrangements.
Zimbabwean liberation war: The armed struggle against white-minority rule in Rhodesia, ending with Zimbabwean independence in 1980. The war’s rival liberation movements and unresolved tensions shaped post-independence politics.
