Gulf of Bothnia

The northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, lying between Sweden and Finland. It is divided into the Bothnian Bay in the north and the Bothnian Sea in the south.

Baltic Sea: An inland sea of the North Atlantic bordered by northern and central European countries. The Gulf of Bothnia is the Baltic Sea’s northernmost arm.
Post-glacial rebound: The gradual rise of land after the weight of vanished ice sheets is removed. The Gulf’s shores, especially around Kvarken, rise as the crust rebounds from ice-age loading.
Port of Luleå: A Swedish port at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia, serving regional industry and trade. Its location makes it a key shipping gateway in the ice-prone northern Gulf.

Bothnian Sea: The southern basin of the Gulf of Bothnia, between central Sweden and Finland. It forms the broader southern section between the Bothnian Bay and the Åland Sea.
River discharge: The volume of water flowing from a river into another body of water over time. Numerous rivers freshen the Gulf and help maintain its north-to-south salinity gradient.
