Gulf of California

The Gulf of California is a long, narrow sea between the Baja California Peninsula and mainland Mexico, linked to the Pacific Ocean at its southern end.

Baja California Peninsula: A long peninsula in northwestern Mexico separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California. Its eastern coast forms the gulf’s western boundary.
Gulf of California Rift Zone: An active tectonic boundary where the Baja California Peninsula moves northwest relative to mainland Mexico. Rifting created the gulf basin and continues to shape its margins.
Vaquita: A small porpoise found only in the northern Gulf of California. Its imminent extinction has become the gulf’s most urgent conservation crisis.
Midriff Islands: A group of islands in the central Gulf of California, including Ángel de la Guarda and Tiburón. Their constricted channels intensify currents and support rich marine communities.

Totoaba: A large croaker native to the Gulf of California, valued for its swim bladder. Illegal totoaba fishing drives gillnet deaths of vaquitas.
Delfín Basin: A deep basin in the northern Gulf of California, partly filled by river-derived sediments. It is a striking geological feature of the gulf’s shallow northern end.
Vaquita conservation: Efforts to prevent the extinction of the vaquita through fishing restrictions and habitat protection. The gulf’s biodiversity crisis has made conservation measures central to its future.
