Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

A 1964 U.S. congressional resolution authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to use military force in Southeast Asia without a formal declaration of war.

Gulf of Tonkin incident: Two reported confrontations between U.S. Navy vessels and North Vietnamese forces in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964. Reports of these encounters prompted Johnson to seek congressional authorization.
