Gunpowder empires

Gunpowder empires is a label for major early modern empires whose expansion relied in part on firearms and artillery, especially the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires.

Ottoman Empire: A Muslim dynasty that ruled a vast empire centered on Anatolia and southeastern Europe from the late thirteenth century to 1922. Its use of artillery and firearms helped it conquer Constantinople and expand across three continents.
Marshall G. S. Hodgson: An American historian of Islam whose three-volume work The Venture of Islam appeared posthumously in 1974. Hodgson coined the influential phrase “gunpowder empires” in discussing early modern Muslim states.
Mehmed II: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1444 to 1446 and 1451 to 1481 and conquered Constantinople in 1453. His siege artillery helped capture the city that became the Ottoman imperial capital.
Mamluk Sultanate: A medieval and early modern state ruled by military elites in Egypt and Syria from 1250 to 1517. Its defeat by Ottoman gunpowder forces complicates any sharp divide between gunpowder and pre-gunpowder states.
Safavid Iran: An Iranian dynasty that ruled from 1501 to 1736 and established Twelver Shiism as the state religion. The Safavid state used firearms and a standing army while competing with Ottoman power.
The Venture of Islam: Marshall G. S. Hodgson's three-volume history of Islamic civilization, published in 1974. The phrase became influential through Hodgson's account of early modern Islamic history.
Selim I: An Ottoman sultan who ruled from 1512 to 1520 and expanded Ottoman power into the Arab lands. His campaigns against the Safavids and Mamluks extended Ottoman rule through decisive military victories.
Ming dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 1368 to 1644 and used gunpowder weapons in warfare. The Ming used gunpowder extensively without usually being included in the classic trio.
Mughal Empire: A South Asian empire founded in 1526 by Babur and ruled by his descendants until the nineteenth century. Early Mughal victories used field artillery and matchlock firearms alongside cavalry.
Early modern period: A historical period, roughly from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, marked by expanding states and global connections. The empires grouped by this label flourished within this broad era.
