Guo Shoujing

Guo Shoujing (1231–1316) was a Chinese astronomer, mathematician, and hydraulic engineer who helped create the Shoushi calendar and designed instruments for astronomical observation.

Shoushi calendar: A Chinese lunisolar calendar introduced in 1281, known for its precise astronomical calculations. Guo helped develop this calendar, the achievement most closely associated with his career.
Gnomon: A vertical rod or column whose shadow is used to measure the Sun’s apparent motion. Guo used a greatly enlarged gnomon to measure solar shadows and refine astronomical constants.
Yuan dynasty: A Chinese dynasty established by Kublai Khan that ruled China from 1271 to 1368. Guo’s major astronomical work took place under Yuan rule and its imperial administration.
Grand Canal of China: A vast canal system linking northern and southern China, developed and expanded over many centuries. Guo worked on improving water transport connections that served the Yuan capital.
Shoushi calendar in Korea: The adoption and adaptation of the Shoushi calendar in Korea during the late medieval period. Its reception beyond China shows the calendar’s regional influence.
Chinese calendar: A lunisolar system of timekeeping that coordinates lunar months with the solar year. The Shoushi calendar was a major reform within this long tradition.
Armillary sphere: An astronomical instrument made of rings representing celestial circles, used to model and measure the sky. Guo improved this instrument to support more accurate observation of celestial positions.
Kublai Khan: The Mongol ruler who founded the Yuan dynasty and became emperor of China. Kublai commissioned the calendar reform project that brought Guo’s astronomical expertise to court.
Tonghui River: A canal linking Dadu with the northern terminus of the Grand Canal system. Guo directed its construction to bring grain and supplies by water to the capital.
Ming calendar: The official Chinese calendar used during the Ming dynasty, succeeding Yuan-era calendrical systems. Ming astronomers inherited and revised methods established in the Shoushi calendar project.
