Gurkha

A soldier recruited from Nepal, especially for service in the Gurkha regiments of the British or Indian Army. Gurkha service is associated with a distinct military tradition and a history shaped by Nepal’s relations with Britain and India.

Anglo-Nepalese War: The 1814–1816 conflict between the Kingdom of Nepal and the East India Company. The war brought British forces into contact with Nepali soldiers and preceded their recruitment.
Gurkha regiments: Military units recruited primarily from Nepal and serving in the British or Indian armed forces. These regiments are the principal institutions in which Gurkhas serve.
Rifleman Kulbir Thapa: A Gurkha soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for actions during the First World War. His award illustrates Gurkha service and recognition in the British Army.
French Foreign Legion: A French Army corps that recruits foreign nationals for military service. It is another prominent force recruited across national borders, but follows a different institutional tradition.
Treaty of Sugauli: The 1816 treaty that ended the Anglo-Nepalese War and defined relations between Nepal and the East India Company. Its aftermath opened the way for Nepali enlistment in Company service.
Gurkha Brigade: The British Army formation that groups its Gurkha units and supporting elements. It coordinates British Army units with a Gurkha identity and recruitment tradition.
Lachhiman Gurung: A Gurkha soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for defending his position in Burma in 1945. His stand became one of the best-known individual acts by a Gurkha soldier.
British Army: The land warfare force of the United Kingdom. British Gurkha units belong to this national army rather than forming an independent army.
East India Company: A British trading company that ruled large parts of the Indian subcontinent before the British Raj. It began recruiting Nepali soldiers after the Anglo-Nepalese War.
Gurkha recruitment: The selection and enlistment of Nepali citizens for service in Gurkha military units. Recruitment determines who enters the regiments and is highly competitive.
