Guru Arjan

Guru Arjan (1563–1606) was the fifth Sikh Guru. He compiled the Adi Granth, developed Amritsar as a Sikh center, and was executed in Lahore under Mughal rule.

Adi Granth: The Sikh scripture compiled by Guru Arjan in 1604, containing hymns by Sikh Gurus and other religious figures. His compilation established a shared scriptural center for the Sikh community.
Guru Ram Das: The fourth Sikh Guru, founder of Amritsar, and father of Guru Arjan. Guru Arjan inherited the Guruship from his father in 1581.
Sikh Gurus: The spiritual leaders who guided the Sikh community from Guru Nanak through Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Arjan was the fifth human Guru in this succession.
Akbar: The third Mughal emperor, whose reign lasted from 1556 to 1605. His reign included Guru Arjan’s early leadership and a period of relative accommodation.
Harmandir Sahib: A Sikh gurdwara in Amritsar, also known as the Golden Temple. Guru Arjan oversaw its construction as a major center of worship.
Guru Nanak: The founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten human Sikh Gurus. Guru Arjan’s authority belonged to the succession that began with Nanak.
Gurdwara: A Sikh place of worship and community gathering, centered on the Guru Granth Sahib. His work at Harmandir Sahib helped establish a lasting focal point for Sikh worship.
Jahangir: The fourth Mughal emperor, who ruled from 1605 to 1627. Jahangir’s account associates him with Guru Arjan’s arrest and execution.
Sikhism: A monotheistic religion founded in Punjab by Guru Nanak and developed by the Sikh Gurus. His leadership and scripture helped shape the tradition as a whole.
Amritsar: A city in Punjab, India, founded by Guru Ram Das and home to Harmandir Sahib. Guru Arjan strengthened the city’s role as a Sikh religious center.
