Gustav III

Gustav III was King of Sweden from 1771 to 1792. He strengthened royal authority, supported the arts, and was assassinated at a masked ball.

Swedish Age of Liberty: A period of Swedish parliamentary government from 1719 to 1772, when the Riksdag held much of the political power. Its factional politics and weakened monarchy formed the setting for Gustav’s accession.
