Gustav Stresemann

Gustav Stresemann was a German statesman who served as chancellor in 1923 and foreign minister from 1923 until his death in 1929. He helped secure Germany’s diplomatic reintegration after World War I and shared the 1926 Nobel Peace Prize.

Locarno Treaties: A 1925 agreement in which Germany, France, Belgium, Britain, and Italy guaranteed borders in western Europe. Stresemann negotiated Germany’s entry into a western security settlement that eased its isolation.
Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic: The catastrophic collapse of the German mark’s value during 1921–1923, culminating in rapid price rises in 1923. Stresemann’s government confronted the crisis by ending passive resistance and introducing a new currency.
National Liberal Party (Germany): A German political party that represented liberal nationalism and supported the German Empire before 1918. Stresemann began his parliamentary career as a prominent National Liberal politician.

Dawes Plan: A 1924 arrangement that restructured German reparations payments and supported economic recovery with foreign loans. As chancellor, Stresemann backed its adoption to ease the crisis over reparations and occupation.
Ruhr occupation: The 1923 occupation of Germany’s Ruhr industrial region by French and Belgian forces over reparations disputes. Stresemann ended German passive resistance there, a politically costly step that helped stop inflation.
