Gustave Courbet

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a French painter who led Realism by depicting contemporary people, labor, and landscapes without idealization.

A Burial at Ornans: Courbet’s monumental painting of a provincial funeral, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1850–51. Its life-size scale gave an ordinary local funeral the dimensions of history painting.
