Gustave Doré

Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was a French artist, illustrator, and sculptor whose dramatic images became closely associated with illustrated editions of major literary works.

The Divine Comedy: Dante Alighieri’s epic poem follows a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. Doré’s engravings for the poem, published in 1861, became among his most famous book illustrations.
