Gustave Moreau

Gustave Moreau (1826–1898) was a French painter whose richly detailed mythological and biblical scenes helped define Symbolism. His dreamlike images favor ambiguity, ornament, and imagined worlds over naturalistic storytelling.

The Apparition: An 1876 painting by Moreau depicting Salome confronting the spectral head of John the Baptist. Its jeweled vision of Salome became a defining example of Moreau’s hallucinatory biblical imagery.
Symbolism: A late nineteenth-century movement in art and literature that used images and symbols to evoke inner states and ideas. Moreau’s paintings helped establish the movement’s preference for suggestion over literal narrative.
