Gutta-percha

Gutta-percha is a natural thermoplastic latex obtained from Southeast Asian trees, especially species of Palaquium. Its ability to soften with heat and harden on cooling made it useful for insulation, molded goods, and dental root fillings.

Submarine telegraph cable: An underwater cable designed to carry telegraph signals between distant shores. Gutta-percha insulated early undersea conductors against seawater.
Polyisoprene: A polymer made from isoprene units, found in natural and synthetic forms. Gutta-percha consists primarily of the trans form of polyisoprene.
Palaquium: A genus of tropical trees native to Southeast Asia, several species of which produce gutta-percha. Trees in this genus supplied much of the gutta-percha harvested for trade.
Latex: A fluid dispersion of polymer particles in water, produced by some plants and animals. Gutta-percha is obtained from plant latex, though its composition differs from common rubber latex.
Overexploitation: The use of a biological resource faster than it can replenish or sustain its population. Intensive gutta-percha harvesting depleted source trees across parts of Southeast Asia.
Root canal treatment: A dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp and seals the cleaned tooth canals. Dentistry adopted gutta-percha as a standard material for filling cleaned root canals.
Trans–cis isomerism: A form of geometric isomerism in which groups lie on opposite or the same sides of a double bond. Its trans-polyisoprene structure distinguishes gutta-percha from cis-polyisoprene rubber.
William Montgomerie: A Scottish surgeon in the East India Company who promoted gutta-percha for practical use in the 1840s. Montgomerie brought the material’s potential to wider scientific and industrial attention.
Natural rubber: An elastic material made mainly from cis-polyisoprene obtained from plant latex. Natural rubber is the close chemical relative whose flexibility contrasts with gutta-percha’s hardness.
Deforestation: The removal or loss of forest cover, often through conversion to other land uses. Demand for gutta-percha contributed to destructive forest extraction in its native region.
