Gutter (comics)

A gutter is the blank space between panels in a comic. It separates images while inviting readers to infer events and transitions that the panels do not show.

Closure (comics): The mental process of inferring a continuous event from separate comic images. Closure is the inference gutters invite between one panel and the next.
Comic strip: A sequence of comic panels, commonly arranged in a horizontal row or short page. Strips use gutters to separate beats within a compact sequence.
Page turn (comics): A comic storytelling device that withholds content until the reader turns to the next page. A gutter before a page turn can prolong anticipation before a reveal.
Scott McCloud: An American cartoonist and theorist known for writing about comics and visual storytelling. McCloud popularized the gutter as a central account of how comics invite inference.
Panel (comics): A bounded image or scene unit in a comic, arranged with other panels to tell a story. Panels are the images gutters separate and connect.
Speech balloon: A graphic container that assigns dialogue or thought to a character in a comic. Balloon placement can cross or interact with the spaces between panels.
Splash page: A comic page dominated by one large image, often with little or no panel division. Its reduced paneling limits the usual role of gutters in pacing sequences.
Understanding Comics: Scott McCloud's 1993 book explaining comics through their visual forms and conventions. Its discussion of closure made the gutter a widely recognized analytical concept.
Montage (comics): A sequence of comic images that suggests a larger event through selected moments or details. Montage makes the reader assemble meaning across separated images.
Caption (comics): A text box in a comic that supplies narration, setting, or other information outside dialogue. Captions can bridge panels and clarify what a gutter leaves unstated.
