Guy Fawkes

Guy Fawkes was an English Catholic conspirator arrested in 1605 while guarding explosives beneath the House of Lords. His role in the Gunpowder Plot later made him a recurring figure in British political culture.

Gunpowder Plot: A 1605 conspiracy to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament. Fawkes guarded the explosives at the center of the conspiracy.
House of Lords: The upper chamber of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The plotters planned to destroy it while king, Lords, and Commons gathered.
Thomas Wintour: An English Catholic conspirator who joined the Gunpowder Plot and helped recruit Guy Fawkes. Wintour connected Fawkes to the wider group of plotters.
Bonfire Night: An annual British observance on 5 November commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. The celebration preserves the date of Fawkes’s arrest as a public anniversary.

Guy Fawkes mask: A stylized mask based on Guy Fawkes’s face, popularized by the graphic novel and film V for Vendetta. The mask turns Fawkes’s historical image into a modern emblem of dissent.
James VI and I: King of Scotland as James VI and England and Ireland as James I. The plotters targeted the king and government under whose rule they faced religious restrictions.
State Opening of Parliament: The formal ceremony that opens a session of the United Kingdom Parliament. The plot was timed to kill the king and political leaders assembled for the ceremony.
