Gwangjong of Goryeo

Gwangjong (925–975) was Goryeo’s fourth king, ruling from 949 to 975. He strengthened royal authority through reforms including the emancipation of enslaved people and the introduction of civil-service examinations.

Goryeo civil-service examination: Goryeo’s examination system selected officials through tests of Confucian learning, beginning under Gwangjong in 958. The examinations gave the king a route to recruit officials beyond powerful hereditary families.

Wang Geon: The founder and first king of Goryeo, who unified much of the Korean Peninsula in 936. Gwangjong inherited the dynasty and a coalition of powerful families assembled by his father.
Queen Daemok: A Goryeo queen consort, daughter of Wang Geon and wife of Gwangjong. Her royal lineage connected Gwangjong’s household to the dynasty’s founding king.
Nobi-angeombeop: A Goryeo law that investigated the status of enslaved people and freed those wrongly reduced to slavery. This reform weakened aristocratic households by restoring freedom to people they had claimed as slaves.
Chinese imperial examination: A system of examinations used by Chinese dynasties to select officials, especially through mastery of classical texts. Goryeo’s new tests drew on the Chinese model while serving Gwangjong’s effort to recruit officials.
Hyejong of Goryeo: Goryeo’s second king, who ruled from 943 to 945 and was a son of Wang Geon. Hyejong’s brief reign preceded the succession struggles Gwangjong faced as a royal prince.
Gyeongjong of Goryeo: Goryeo’s fifth king, who succeeded his father Gwangjong and ruled from 975 to 981. His accession followed the reforms and political tensions left by Gwangjong’s reign.
Goryeo aristocracy: The hereditary elite whose powerful families dominated politics and landholding in Goryeo. Gwangjong’s reforms sought to curb the aristocrats’ influence over the monarchy.
Shuang Ji: A Chinese scholar and official who served at Goryeo’s court and helped establish its civil-service examinations. His expertise helped shape the examination system introduced in 958.
