Gyeongbokgung

Gyeongbokgung is a royal palace in Seoul, built in 1395 as the main palace of Korea’s Joseon dynasty. Its courtyards, halls, gates, and gardens formed a ceremonial and administrative center of royal government.

Gwanghwamun: The southern main gate of Gyeongbokgung, rebuilt several times since the palace’s founding. This monumental entrance marks the palace’s southern boundary and faces central Seoul.
Joseon dynasty: A Korean dynasty that ruled from 1392 to 1910 and shaped the country’s political and cultural institutions. Gyeongbokgung was built as the dynasty’s principal royal residence and seat of government.
Feng shui: A traditional Chinese system for arranging buildings and landscapes in relation to terrain and directional forces. Gyeongbokgung’s placement against Bugaksan reflects geomantic principles used in siting royal capitals.
Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea: The South Korean government agency responsible for protecting and managing cultural heritage. The agency oversees conservation and reconstruction work at Gyeongbokgung.
Geunjeongjeon: Gyeongbokgung’s principal throne hall, used for royal ceremonies and formal audiences. Its elevated throne platform and broad courtyard staged the king’s public authority.
Taejo of Joseon: The founder and first king of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, who reigned from 1392 to 1398. Taejo established the new dynasty and commissioned its main palace in the new capital.
Confucianism: A tradition of thought centered on ethics, social relationships, ritual, and political responsibility. Confucian ideals informed the palace’s ceremonial order and the hierarchy of its spaces.
National Palace Museum of Korea: A museum in Seoul devoted to the royal culture and material history of Korea’s Joseon dynasty. Its collections provide historical context for the palace’s rulers, rituals, and furnishings.
Gyeonghoeru: A pavilion on an artificial pond at Gyeongbokgung, used for royal banquets and diplomatic receptions. The pavilion’s setting made water and landscape part of palace ceremony.
Hanyang: The historical name of Seoul when it served as the capital of Joseon Korea. Gyeongbokgung anchored the royal precinct of Joseon’s newly established capital.
