Gynocentrism

Gynocentrism is a perspective or social arrangement that centers women’s experiences, interests, or needs. The term is used in varied scholarly and political contexts, sometimes descriptively and sometimes critically.

Androcentrism: A perspective that treats men’s experiences or interests as the human norm or central reference point. It names the contrasting orientation: centering men rather than women.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman: An American writer and social theorist whose work examined women’s economic dependence and social position. Her account of male-centered institutions helps frame early critiques of gendered social organization.
Women’s health: A field addressing health conditions, care, and outcomes that affect women across their lives. Women-centered health research challenges medical systems built around male bodies as defaults.
Gender equality: The condition in which people of different genders have equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities, and standing. Equality seeks comparable status, while gynocentrism specifically places women at the center.
Feminism: A family of movements and theories concerned with gender equality and the conditions shaping women’s lives. Some feminist approaches center women’s experiences to expose neglected forms of inequality.
The Man-Made World: A 1911 book by Charlotte Perkins Gilman arguing that society had been shaped around men’s interests and perspectives. Gilman’s title captures a direct historical counterpart to claims about women-centered social arrangements.
Women’s shelters: Residential services offering safety and support, especially for women escaping domestic violence or homelessness. These services organize protection and care around needs disproportionately experienced by women.
Gender equity: The fair treatment of people across genders, including measures responsive to different circumstances and barriers. Equity can address women’s needs without making women the organizing center of every decision.
Gender essentialism: The belief that women and men have fixed, inherent characteristics grounded in their sex or gender. Centering women does not by itself require claims that women share an essential nature.
Feminist standpoint theory: An approach holding that social position shapes knowledge and that marginalized perspectives can reveal structures of power. It offers a scholarly reason to begin analysis from women’s situated experiences.
