Gynoecium

The gynoecium is the female reproductive part of a flower, consisting of one or more carpels. Its carpels contain the ovules and may be separate or fused.

Carpel: A flower structure that bears ovules and typically consists of a stigma, style, and ovary. One or more carpels make up the gynoecium.
Pollination: The transfer of pollen to a flower's stigma or to a seed plant's ovule-bearing structure. Pollen must reach a receptive stigma for many gynoecia to initiate fertilization.
Apocarpous gynoecium: A gynoecium whose carpels are separate from one another. It contrasts with a syncarpous gynoecium, whose carpels are fused.
Floral formula: A symbolic notation summarizing the number and arrangement of floral organs. Its symbols record carpel number and whether the gynoecium is fused.
Ovary (botany): The basal part of a carpel that encloses one or more ovules. The gynoecium's ovary houses the ovules before fertilization.
Pollen tube: A tube that grows from a pollen grain and carries sperm cells toward an ovule. It grows through carpel tissues toward the ovules enclosed by the gynoecium.
Syncarpous gynoecium: A gynoecium formed from two or more fused carpels. Its fused carpels contrast with the separate carpels of an apocarpous gynoecium.
Floral diagram: A schematic cross-section showing the number, position, and relationships of a flower's organs. It depicts carpel arrangement and ovary position in the gynoecium.
Ovule: A seed-plant structure containing the female gametophyte that develops into a seed after fertilization. Ovules develop inside the gynoecium and become seeds after fertilization.
Double fertilization: The angiosperm process in which two sperm cells fertilize the egg and central cell within an ovule. It occurs in the ovules housed by the gynoecium.
