Gyromagnetic ratio

The gyromagnetic ratio is the ratio of a particle’s magnetic dipole moment to its angular momentum. It determines how strongly the particle’s magnetic moment responds to angular momentum and magnetic fields.

Magnetic dipole moment: A vector quantity describing the strength and orientation of a magnetic source. It is the numerator in the gyromagnetic ratio and sets the moment’s direction.
Magnetic moment: A measure of the strength and orientation of a system’s magnetic properties. The gyromagnetic ratio relates this broader magnetic quantity to angular momentum.
Nuclear magnetic resonance: A spectroscopic technique that detects transitions between nuclear spin states in a magnetic field. The nuclear ratio converts field strength into the resonance frequency used for spectroscopy.
Landé g-factor: A dimensionless factor relating an atomic state’s magnetic moment to its angular momentum. It modifies the basic proportionality when orbital and spin contributions combine.
Angular momentum: A conserved vector quantity describing rotational motion, including orbital and intrinsic contributions. It is the denominator that relates rotation to magnetic moment.
Quantum spin: An intrinsic form of angular momentum carried by quantum particles. Spin supplies the angular momentum paired with magnetic moment in particle ratios.
Magnetic resonance imaging: A medical imaging method that uses nuclear magnetic resonance signals to map tissues. Hydrogen’s gyromagnetic ratio helps determine the frequencies and spatial encoding of MRI signals.
Dirac equation: A relativistic quantum equation describing spin-one-half particles such as electrons. It predicts the electron’s leading magnetic moment and its gyromagnetic ratio.
Larmor precession: The precession of a magnetic moment around an applied magnetic field at a characteristic frequency. The gyromagnetic ratio sets the precession frequency per unit field.
Orbital angular momentum: Angular momentum arising from a particle’s motion around a chosen origin. Orbital motion can generate magnetic moments with a characteristic gyromagnetic ratio.
